How long does it take to apply for an NIE number?

This information is up to date and has been checked on 2025.

The time it takes to apply for an NIE number is one of the most common questions among future property owners, autónomos and expats in Spain. There is no single answer: depending on the route chosen, the province, the season and the quality of your file, the NIE can land in 24 hours or in several months. Misjudging this timeline can cost you a notarial signing, a university start, or an employment contract.

This article gives you realistic ranges for the three official routes, the factors that move the lead time (season, city, profile), how to speed up a request when time is tight, and concrete examples for different projects. We also explain how to combine the related steps (bank account, padrón, NUSS) without unnecessarily extending the overall calendar.

What is the average lead time per route?

The three official routes to obtain an NIE, detailed in the NIE in Spain, have very different lead times. Here are the realistic ranges based on current feedback.

Route 1: in Spain at the Policía Nacional

This is the fastest route for those already on site. Once the cita previa is secured (which can itself take 1 to 4 weeks depending on the city), the NIE is generally issued the same day as the appointment or within 1 to 2 weeks. In the most efficient stations (small towns, off-peak periods), the NIE can be issued within an hour. Realistic total lead time from booking the cita previa: 2 to 6 weeks.

Route 2: at a Spanish consulate abroad

This is the slowest route. Consulates process hundreds of files per month and their lead times vary considerably. For French consulates (Paris, Lyon, Marseille), count generally 6 to 12 weeks between booking and NIE issuance. Some less busy consulates (Geneva, certain German consulates) are faster (4 to 6 weeks). The appointment itself can require 4 to 8 weeks of waiting.

Route 3: via power of attorney through a gestoría

This is the middle option in terms of timing but often the most predictable. Once the apostilled power of attorney is sent to the gestoría (count 1-2 weeks for the power of attorney plus apostille in your country), the gestoría secures an appointment and files within 1 to 3 weeks. The NIE is then issued within a few days to 2 weeks. Realistic total lead time: 3 to 6 weeks from signing the power of attorney. The full cost picture sits in what an NIE number costs.

What factors affect the lead time?

Beyond the route, several parameters can triple your wait.

The season of the year

Spanish administrations have seasonal peaks. July, August, September are the worst months to secure an appointment: Spaniards returning from holiday, foreign students starting university, end-of-summer property buying waves. December and January are also clogged because of the holidays and partial closures. March to May and October to November are the smoothest windows.

The city and the province

In Madrid, Barcelona and parts of the Costa del Sol (Málaga, Marbella), police stations are saturated and waits can reach 4-6 weeks for a cita previa. Conversely, smaller towns (Zamora, Soria, Teruel, but also Valencia and Alicante out of season) have much shorter lead times. A good gestoría knows the fastest stations and can steer you to the most efficient province for your file.

The applicant profile

EU/EEA citizens are generally processed faster than non-EU citizens for the simple NIE (without residence card). Non-EU citizens applying for a TIE (residence card) face longer lead times depending on the type of visa and migration situation. For EU/EEA applicants, the NIE is typically issued in less than 2 weeks once the appointment is secured.

The quality of the file

A complete file with clear motive (signed sale agreement, employment contract, university enrolment letter) is processed quickly. An incomplete file or one with a vague motive can be refused on the spot, costing 4-6 weeks. The cita previa is single-use, so a refusal means re-booking and starting from scratch.

How long for the cita previa itself?

This is often the limiting factor for the in-Spain route. The cita previa system is centralised on sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es and opens slots by province.

Variability by city

In central Madrid, slots can sit 4-8 weeks ahead. Barcelona is similar in high season. In Málaga, lead times vary widely between the centre and outlying stations. In Valencia, you often find slots within 1-2 weeks. Mid-size and small towns (Murcia, Almería, Albacete) usually have slots within the week.

Tip: try several stations

The cita previa portal lets you search for slots in several stations within the same province. If central Madrid is saturated, try Móstoles, Getafe, Alcalá de Henares. If Barcelona is blocked, look at Sabadell, Hospitalet, Badalona. An extra hour of transport can save 4-6 weeks of waiting.

Catching released slots

Some applicants cancel their cita at the last minute, freeing up slots. By checking the portal at different times of day (especially early morning and evening), you can sometimes pick up a slot for the current week. It is not guaranteed but it works.

How can you speed up the request when time is tight?

If your timetable is squeezed, several levers help you save weeks.

Power of attorney with a fast gestoría

This is the most predictable option when you are not in Spain. A good gestoría can compress the lead time to 15-21 days between receipt of the apostilled power of attorney and delivery of the NIE. Pick a gestoría that works with fast stations and does not subcontract the cita previa.

Look at mid-size provinces

If you can travel to Spain, choose a cita in a mid-size province rather than a major capital. Murcia, León, Cáceres, Albacete have near-zero lead times. This is one of the strategies gestorías use.

Prepare a flawless file

A complete file from the first try avoids any back and forth. Bring all originals and copies, your modelo EX-15 properly filled out in Spanish, the proof of tasa payment, your valid passport, and a clear motive (dated sale agreement, signed contract, official certificate). Double check before the appointment.

Anticipate the power of attorney and apostille

For route 3, the power of attorney and its apostille are often the critical path. Schedule the notarial signing as soon as your project is firm, and pick a notary who knows how to apostille quickly (some take 4 weeks, others 1 week). If you live in a country that is not party to the Hague Convention, the procedure is heavier (consular legalisation) and takes longer.

How can you combine the NIE with related steps?

Once the NIE is secured, several follow-on steps chain together. Planning them well avoids doubling lead times.

Bank account in parallel

Many Spanish banks can open a non-resident account without an NIE and then convert it to a resident account once the NIE arrives. You can therefore launch the bank request in parallel with the NIE request, saving 2-3 weeks.

Padrón after the NIE

Padrón registration requires your NIE and proof of address. Once the NIE is in hand, the padrón can often be done in 1-2 weeks. It is rarely a bottleneck.

NUSS and autónomo or SL alta

If your project includes economic activity, request your NUSS as soon as you have your NIE. To register as an autónomo, see how to become an autónomo. To set up an SL, see the step-by-step guide to creating an SL. The NUSS is generally issued in a few days, sometimes immediately. The detail of the NUSS is in everything about the NUSS number in Spain.

Digital certificate

For online procedures, the digital certificate is requested after the NIE. Count 1-2 weeks between the request and effective installation. The detail sits in the digital certificate and Cl@ve in Spain.

Concrete examples of timelines

Here are a few typical cases to project against your own planning.

Property buyer signing in 8 weeks

A Belgian buyer signed a sale agreement in Murcia with the final signing in 8 weeks. She is in Belgium. She opts for the power of attorney route: signing in week 1, apostille in weeks 2-3, dispatch to the gestoría in week 3. The gestoría secures an appointment in week 4, files in week 5, NIE delivered in week 6. Two-week buffer before the notarial signing: comfortable.

Erasmus student starting in September

A French student leaves for Erasmus in Salamanca on 1 September. He books an appointment at the Spanish consulate in Bordeaux in late May, getting an appointment in early July. NIE issued mid-August, just in time. The buffer is thin: starting the procedure as soon as the Erasmus is confirmed is essential.

Future autónomo wanting to start in 4 weeks

A German has just settled in Valencia and wants to register as an autónomo in 4 weeks to start invoicing. He books a cita previa in week 1 (appointment in week 3 in Valencia-Sur), NIE issued in week 4. He can then do the RETA alta and start invoicing in week 5. A tight but realistic schedule.

Heir who must sign a succession in 6 months

A French citizen has 6 months to formalise a succession in Marbella. She has plenty of time: she books an appointment at the Spanish consulate in Marseille (appointment 7 weeks later), NIE issued 4 weeks after the appointment. Total: 11 weeks from booking. Comfortable buffer.

What pitfalls unnecessarily lengthen the procedure?

A few mistakes keep recurring and cost weeks. Avoiding them keeps your overall calendar tight.

Doing everything sequentially instead of parallelising

Many expats wait for the NIE before launching the power of attorney, the bank account, the padrón, and so on. This is wasted time: the power of attorney can be prepared in parallel, the non-resident bank account can be opened before the NIE, and the cita previa can be booked as soon as you have a project. Launch everything that can run in parallel.

Choosing a major capital instead of a mid-size city

Central Madrid and central Barcelona are the worst options for lead times. If you can choose, head to a mid-size city. The gestoría can help you pick the fastest station for your file.

Wrong season

If you can shift your project, avoid July to September and December to January. March and October-November will save you several weeks.

Badly apostilled power of attorney

A power of attorney without a valid apostille is rejected on arrival in Spain. That can cost 2-3 weeks to redo. Always check with your notary that the apostille is scheduled and received before sending.

Confusing NIE lead time with TIE lead time

The simple NIE is issued quickly. The TIE (residence card for non-EU) takes much longer: 1 to 3 months after arrival in Spain with a visa, sometimes more. Do not confuse the two: the NIE is just an identifier, the TIE is a residence permit. For the wider picture of identifiers, see the NIE in Spain and the difference between NIE and NIF.

Where to start to plan your ideal calendar?

The time it takes to apply for an NIE number is manageable as soon as you know the ranges and the levers. The golden rule: launch the procedure as soon as your project is firm, and choose your route based on the buffer you have.

For a project with less than 6 weeks until deadline, opt for the power of attorney via a gestoría. Between 6 and 12 weeks, the consulate is workable but stay cautious. Beyond 12 weeks, every route works. If you are already in Spain, book your cita previa immediately, even if your file is not yet complete: the cita can be moved and your place in the queue is what matters. Linked to this, the impact of your NIE on your tax status in Spain is worth understanding before you start.
