What is the número de soporte and where do you find it?
The número de soporte in Spain is one of the most discreet and most poorly understood administrative identifiers in the Spanish landscape. When you request a digital certificate from the FNMT, are asked to enter it in a form, and you search in vain for an obvious number on your NIE document, the form is often referring to the soporte without naming it clearly. The result: hours lost trying to figure out where to find it and how to tell it apart from the NIE itself.
This article explains exactly what the número de soporte is, what it is used for, where to find it on your plastic TIE or your green A4 certificate, how to distinguish it from other Spanish identifiers, and why it has become essential for digital procedures. We also detail the most frequent pitfalls and the procedure if you have lost your NIE document.
What exactly is the número de soporte?
The soporte is neither an NIE, nor a NIF, nor a fiscal identifier. It is a security code specific to the document.
A security code on the NIE document
The número de soporte is a unique code printed on your NIE document (plastic TIE for non-EU citizens, green A4 certificate for EU citizens) that validates the authenticity of the document against the Policía Nacional databases. Unlike the NIE that identifies the person, the soporte identifies the physical document. If you receive a new NIE document (TIE renewal for instance), the NIE stays the same but the soporte changes.
Soporte format
The format differs by document type:
- On a plastic TIE: 9 characters starting with the letter
Efollowed by 8 digits. Example:E12345678. - On a green A4 certificate (EU): code starting with
IXESPorAXESPfollowed by digits. Example:IXESP00012345A.
Not to be confused with the NIE
The NIE identifies the person (X1234567A); the soporte identifies the document (E12345678 or IXESP00012345A). They are printed on the same paper or card but in different places and serve different purposes. To grasp the full ecosystem, see the NIE in Spain and the difference between NIE and NIF.
What is the número de soporte used for?
The soporte intervenes in several online procedures where the authenticity of the NIE document must be checked.
FNMT digital certificate request
This is the most frequent use. When you request a digital certificate as an individual from the FNMT (Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre), the online form asks for your soporte to validate that you have a valid NIE document. Without a correct soporte, the request is rejected. To understand the role of the digital certificate, see the digital certificate and Cl@ve in Spain.
Cl@ve activation
To activate Cl@ve PIN or Cl@ve Permanente online, the soporte is also required. It is a way for the administration to cross-reference the person number (NIE) with the document number (soporte) and reduce the risk of identity theft.
Checks on the sede electrónica
On some sede electrónica portals (notably that of the Ministerio del Interior for extranjería procedures), the soporte is requested to confirm your identity before accessing personal data or online services.
Online banking procedures for foreigners
A few Spanish banks, especially those that accept non-residents, ask for the soporte during online identity verification (KYC) when opening an account. It is less systematic but it can happen.
Where do you find the número de soporte on your NIE document?
This is the practical part: spotting the right number on the right document.
On the TIE (plastic card for non-EU)
On the TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero), the número de soporte is found on the back of the card, in a discreet area:
- Turn the card over (back).
- Locate the machine identification zone (the lines with chevrons
<<<readable by machine). - The soporte starts with the letter
Efollowed by 8 digits:E12345678.
It can also be printed separately under a label like "Núm. soporte" or "Soporte" depending on TIE versions.
On the green A4 certificate (for EU citizens)
On the Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Unión (the large green A4 issued to EU citizens), the soporte is typically found:
- In the upper right corner of the document, next to the Policía Nacional logo.
- Or at the bottom of the document, near the seal and signature.
- Sometimes under the label "Núm. de soporte" or "Soporte" in small print.
The format starts with IXESP or AXESP depending on the document version, followed by digits and sometimes a letter. Example: IXESP00012345A.
On the passport
The passport does not contain a número de soporte. If you only have a passport (without an NIE), you have no soporte and you cannot request a digital certificate before obtaining your NIE. For the NIE procedure, see the NIE in Spain and how long it takes to apply for an NIE.
What if you have lost your NIE document and therefore your soporte?
This is a frequent situation that can block several procedures.
Request a duplicate of the NIE document
If you have lost your TIE or green A4 certificate, you must request a duplicado from the Policía Nacional. The procedure:
- Book a cita previa on
sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es. - Submit form EX-15 (the same as for the initial request) ticking the "duplicado" box.
- Pay the tasa via modelo 790 código 012 (~€10).
- Present your original ID and the loss declaration (if stolen, add the police report).
Lead time: 1 to 4 weeks depending on region. The NIE stays the same, only the soporte changes.
Temporary alternatives in the meantime
While you wait for your new document, some procedures remain possible: you can still use your NIE for steps that do not require the soporte (account opening, notarial signing, etc.). Digital procedures like the FNMT certificate will have to wait for the new document. The cost of these procedures is detailed in what an NIE number costs.
If you have an old copy
If you kept a photocopy or scan of the old document, the soporte that appears on it is no longer valid after issuance of the new document. Do not try to use it in an online procedure: the Policía checks in real time and the rejection is immediate.
What pitfalls are common with the soporte?
The classic confusions waste hours for applicants.
Confusing NIE and soporte
The most frequent error: entering your NIE (X1234567A) in the field that asks for the soporte (E12345678). The FNMT form returns a cryptic error and many give up. Always check the requested format: if a code starting with E or IXESP is expected, it is the soporte; if X, Y or Z followed by 7 digits and a letter, it is the NIE.
Confusing soporte and NUSS
The NUSS (social security number) is yet another 12-digit identifier. No link to the soporte. To grasp NUSS uses, see everything about the NUSS number in Spain.
Believing the soporte is for life
Unlike the NIE which is allocated for life, the soporte changes every time a new NIE document is issued. If you renew your TIE, your old soporte is invalidated. Always keep your document up to date when running digital procedures.
Wrong format entered
On forms, some applicants add or remove characters (spaces, dashes) or get confused with similar digits (0/O, 1/I). Copy the soporte character by character from your document, without interpretation.
Believing the soporte is mandatory for every procedure
Many procedures in Spain do not require the soporte. To open a bank account, sign at the notary, file a tax return, pay the IBI: only the NIE/NIF is enough. The soporte intervenes mainly in digital identification procedures (FNMT, Cl@ve, certain sede electrónicas). The myth around it is also dismantled in nine misconceptions about the NIE number.
What other Spanish documents should not be confused with the soporte?
A few useful reminders within the Spanish identifier galaxy.
NIE/NIF
The administrative and fiscal identifier of the person, allocated for life. Format X1234567A. See the NIE in Spain and what is a NIF number.
NUSS
Social security identifier, allocated for life. 12-digit format. See everything about the NUSS number.
TIE
Plastic card for non-EU citizens that contains the NIE and the soporte. Official ID document.
Digital certificate
A computer file installed on your computer or phone, that lets you sign and identify yourself online. See the digital certificate and Cl@ve.
Cl@ve
Online identification system with PIN or permanent password. An alternative to the digital certificate for many procedures.
How do you know if you need the soporte for your procedure?
A few practical rules to avoid searching unnecessarily.
Procedures that require the soporte
- Digital certificate request from the FNMT.
- Activation of Cl@ve PIN or Cl@ve Permanente online.
- Some procedures on the Ministerio del Interior sede electrónica (Extranjería).
- A few online banking requests for foreigners.
Procedures that do NOT require the soporte
- Opening a bank account at a branch.
- Signing a notarial deed.
- Filing a tax return (modelo 100, 210, 720).
- NUSS request from the TGSS.
- Padrón municipal registration.
- Registering as an autónomo (RETA alta).
- Setting up an SL.
When in doubt
If a procedure asks for a "número de soporte", "código de soporte", or "número del documento", it is the soporte. If it asks for "número de identificación", "NIE" or "NIF", it is your NIE. The label precision is almost always sufficient to distinguish.
Where to start with the número de soporte
The número de soporte in Spain is a discreet but essential security code for digital identification procedures, especially the FNMT digital certificate and Cl@ve activation. Its main difficulty is that it visually merges with the NIE for those unfamiliar with Spanish documentation.
The practical rule: take a clear photo of your TIE or your green A4 certificate as soon as you receive it, identify and note your NIE and your soporte separately, and keep that information at hand for digital procedures. If you lose your document, request a duplicate quickly to avoid being blocked in your online steps.
